01

Who We Are

Inshield Ltd ("Inshield", "we", "us", "our") is a UK-based insurtech company and the data controller responsible for personal data processed through the CURAS platform.

CURAS is a professional underwriting intelligence platform designed exclusively for use by insurance professionals, underwriters, and brokers. It consolidates third-party data checks — including driver licence verification, vehicle history, and adverse media screening — into a single automated workflow to support motor insurance underwriting decisions.

ICO Registration: Inshield Ltd is registered with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) under the Data Protection Act 2018. Registration reference: Pending Registration.

02

What This Policy Covers

This Privacy Policy explains how Inshield collects, uses, stores, and shares personal data when the CURAS platform is accessed or used by authorised insurance professionals ("Platform Users").

CURAS is a business-to-business (B2B) service. The data subjects whose personal information is processed within the platform are third parties — typically motor insurance applicants, policyholders, or named drivers — whose data is submitted by Platform Users as part of an underwriting workflow.

Important

CURAS is not intended for use by, or direct access from, members of the public. If you are an individual whose data has been processed through the CURAS platform and you wish to exercise your data subject rights, please contact us using the details in Section 13.

03

Data We Collect & Process

The CURAS platform processes personal data relating to individuals submitted by Platform Users for the purpose of underwriting checks. The categories of personal data processed include:

Category Data Elements Source
Driver Identity Full name, date of birth, driving licence number, address Platform User / DVLA
Licence & Entitlement Licence category, issue date, endorsements, penalty points, disqualifications DVLA / DVSA
Vehicle History Vehicle registration mark (VRM), VIN, finance outstanding, write-off category, ownership history HPI / third-party vehicle data provider
Adverse Media Name-based screening against publicly available news sources and media databases Third-party news API / media screening tool
Platform User Data Name, work email address, employer organisation, access logs, search history within the platform Directly from Platform Users at registration

We do not collect or process special category data (as defined under Article 9 UK GDPR) unless specifically required and a separate lawful basis established.

04

How We Use Personal Data

Personal data processed through CURAS is used for the following purposes:

Purpose Description
Underwriting checks Facilitating driver licence verification, vehicle history checks, and adverse media screening on behalf of Platform Users
Risk assessment Aggregating third-party data check results to support motor insurance underwriting decisions
Fraud prevention Identifying discrepancies, flags, or adverse indicators relevant to insurance risk
Platform operation Maintaining user accounts, access controls, audit logs, and platform security
Legal compliance Meeting obligations under UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018, and applicable FCA / insurance regulatory requirements

We do not use personal data processed through CURAS for direct marketing, profiling for non-underwriting purposes, or any purpose incompatible with those stated above.

05

Lawful Basis for Processing

We rely on the following lawful bases under UK GDPR Article 6 for processing personal data:

Lawful Basis Application
Legitimate Interests (Art. 6(1)(f)) Processing driver, vehicle, and adverse media data to support insurance underwriting — a recognised and proportionate legitimate interest within the financial services sector. A Legitimate Interests Assessment (LIA) is maintained internally.
Contract (Art. 6(1)(b)) Processing Platform User data necessary to provide CURAS under our terms of service agreement
Legal Obligation (Art. 6(1)(c)) Where processing is required to meet our obligations under data protection law, fraud prevention obligations, or regulatory requirements
Note on Legitimate Interests

Where we rely on legitimate interests, we have assessed that our interests do not override the fundamental rights and freedoms of data subjects. The use of data for insurance underwriting is an established, proportionate practice within the financial services industry.

06

Third-Party Data Sources

CURAS retrieves data from third-party sources as part of its automated underwriting workflow. These providers are contractually bound to process data in accordance with UK GDPR, and appropriate Data Processing Agreements (DPAs) are in place.

Categories of third-party data sources used within the platform include:

Source Type Data Provided
DVLA / DVSA (via licensed API) Driver licence status, entitlements, endorsements, penalty points
Vehicle data provider HPI checks, outstanding finance, write-off markers, vehicle history
Adverse media / news screening Publicly available news articles and media sources referenced against subject names

Inshield acts as a data controller in respect of how retrieved data is stored and used within the platform. In some circumstances, Inshield may act as a data processor on behalf of Platform Users, depending on the contractual arrangements in place.

07

Who We Share Data With

We do not sell personal data. We may share personal data in the following circumstances:

Recipient Reason
Platform Users (insurers / brokers) Results of underwriting checks are returned to the authorised Platform User who initiated the query
Third-party API providers Minimum data shared as required to retrieve check results (e.g. licence number passed to DVLA API)
Cloud infrastructure providers Hosting and storage of platform data under DPA; data held within the UK/EEA
Legal or regulatory authorities Where required by law, court order, or regulatory obligation (e.g. ICO, FCA)

All third parties with whom we share personal data are subject to appropriate contractual safeguards. We do not transfer personal data outside of the UK or EEA without ensuring adequate protections are in place in accordance with UK GDPR Chapter V.

08

Data Retention

We retain personal data only for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes for which it was collected, or as required by law.

Data Type Retention Period Reason
Underwriting check results 7 years Insurance regulatory record-keeping requirements
Platform User account data Duration of contract + 2 years Contractual and audit purposes
Access and audit logs 2 years Security, fraud prevention, dispute resolution

Upon expiry of the relevant retention period, personal data is securely deleted or anonymised in accordance with our internal data disposal policy.

Inshield takes the security of personal data seriously. We implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect personal data against unauthorised access, loss, destruction, or disclosure. These measures include:

Encryption of data in transit (TLS) and at rest; role-based access controls for Platform Users; API key management and secure credential handling; audit logging of all data access and search activity; and regular security reviews.

Inshield is pursuing Cyber Essentials certification as part of its ongoing commitment to information security. In the event of a personal data breach that poses a risk to individuals, we will notify the ICO within 72 hours and affected parties as required under UK GDPR Article 33-34.

About Inshield & CURAS

Inshield Ltd is a UK-based insurtech company providing data intelligence services to the motor insurance sector. CURAS is Inshield's proprietary underwriting platform that consolidates third-party data checks — including DVLA driver licence verification, vehicle history (HPI/finance), and adverse media screening — into a single automated workflow.

CURAS is designed exclusively for use by authorised insurance professionals engaged in motor insurance underwriting. It is not a consumer-facing product and is not intended for access by members of the public.

Inshield Ltd is registered with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) under Registration Reference: Pending Registration. Company Registration: 17181010.

03

Eligibility & Access

Access to CURAS is strictly limited to Platform Users who have been granted access by Inshield on behalf of an Approved Organisation. Access is not open to the general public and is not available on a self-serve basis.

To be eligible for access, you must:

  • Be an employee, contractor, or authorised representative of an Approved Organisation
  • Be acting in a professional capacity in connection with motor insurance underwriting
  • Have been individually invited or approved by Inshield to access the Platform
  • Agree to these Terms on behalf of your organisation
  • Be aged 18 or over

Inshield reserves the right to approve or reject access requests at its sole discretion, without obligation to provide reasons.

Regulated Context

By accessing CURAS, you confirm that your organisation operates in compliance with applicable UK financial services regulation, including (where applicable) FCA authorisation or appointed representative status. CURAS checks access data regulated under the Data Protection Act 2018 and UK GDPR — use of the Platform for purposes outside of legitimate insurance underwriting is not permitted.

04

Permitted Use

Subject to these Terms, Inshield grants you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to access and use CURAS solely for the following purposes:

  • Conducting driver licence checks (DVLA) in connection with motor insurance underwriting
  • Running vehicle history checks (including finance and write-off data) for underwriting assessment
  • Performing adverse media screening on individuals as part of a legitimate underwriting workflow
  • Reviewing and acting upon Check Results within your organisation's underwriting processes
  • Generating and retaining underwriting records in accordance with your regulatory obligations

All use of CURAS must be in accordance with applicable law, including the Data Protection Act 2018, UK GDPR, and any sector-specific regulatory obligations applicable to your organisation.

Each Check submitted through the Platform must relate to a genuine, active insurance underwriting assessment. Speculative, bulk, or exploratory queries not connected to a live underwriting decision are not permitted.

05

Prohibited Use

You must not use CURAS in any of the following ways:

  • For any purpose other than legitimate motor insurance underwriting
  • To conduct Checks on individuals without a lawful basis under UK GDPR
  • To conduct speculative, bulk, or automated mass queries not connected to live underwriting decisions
  • To share, resell, sublicense, or redistribute Check Results to any third party not authorised under these Terms
  • To copy, scrape, reverse-engineer, decompile, or extract data from the Platform in an automated or unauthorised manner
  • To attempt to gain unauthorised access to any part of the Platform, its infrastructure, or other users' accounts
  • To use Check Results for marketing, credit scoring, employment screening, or any purpose unrelated to insurance underwriting
  • To submit false, fabricated, or manipulated data in connection with a Check
  • In any manner that violates applicable law, regulation, or the rights of any third party
Important

Misuse of data accessed through CURAS may constitute a criminal offence under the Computer Misuse Act 1990, the Data Protection Act 2018, or other applicable legislation. Inshield reserves the right to report suspected unlawful activity to the appropriate authorities.

06

Account Security

You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your login credentials and for all activity that occurs under your account. You must not share your credentials with any other person, including colleagues within your organisation who have not been separately approved by Inshield.

You agree to notify Inshield immediately at support@inshield.co.uk if you become aware of any actual or suspected unauthorised access to your account or any security breach affecting the Platform.

Inshield maintains audit logs of all access and Check activity. Platform Users should have no expectation of anonymity in their use of CURAS. Activity logs may be reviewed by Inshield for compliance, security, and fraud prevention purposes.

Account Responsibility

Your Approved Organisation is jointly responsible for ensuring that all individuals it authorises to access CURAS comply with these Terms. Inshield may hold the Approved Organisation accountable for breaches committed by its authorised users.

07

Data & Privacy

The use of CURAS necessarily involves the processing of personal data relating to third-party individuals (such as insurance applicants and named drivers). Platform Users are responsible for ensuring that their use of the Platform is lawful and that a valid legal basis exists under UK GDPR for each Check submitted.

Inshield's collection and use of personal data in connection with the Platform is governed by the CURAS Privacy Policy, which forms part of these Terms by reference.

Where Inshield processes personal data on behalf of an Approved Organisation (acting as a data processor), a separate Data Processing Agreement (DPA) may be required. Platform Users should ensure that appropriate data sharing and processing agreements are in place between their organisation and Inshield prior to submitting Checks.

  • You must not submit personal data to CURAS unless you have a lawful basis to do so
  • Check Results must be handled, stored, and retained in accordance with your own data protection obligations
  • You must not use Check Results for any purpose beyond that for which the Check was originally conducted
  • You are responsible for responding to data subject requests relating to Checks your organisation has initiated
08

Intellectual Property

All intellectual property rights in CURAS — including the Platform's software, design, workflow logic, algorithms, user interface, branding, and documentation — are owned by or licensed to Inshield Ltd. Nothing in these Terms transfers any intellectual property rights to you or your organisation.

Check Results incorporate data retrieved from third-party sources (including DVLA, HPI providers, and media databases). Ownership of such underlying data remains with the respective data owners. Inshield grants no licence over third-party data beyond what is necessary for your permitted use of the Platform.

You must not reproduce, copy, modify, adapt, or create derivative works from any part of the CURAS Platform without Inshield's prior written consent.

09

Platform Availability

Inshield will use reasonable endeavours to ensure that CURAS is available and functional during normal business hours. However, we do not guarantee uninterrupted access to the Platform and accept no liability for downtime caused by:

  • Scheduled or emergency maintenance
  • Third-party API outages (including DVLA, HPI providers, or media data sources)
  • Circumstances beyond Inshield's reasonable control, including cyberattacks, internet disruptions, or force majeure events

Inshield reserves the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue any feature of CURAS at any time, with or without notice, and without liability to Platform Users.

10

Disclaimers & Limitation of Liability

CURAS provides data retrieved from third-party sources as an informational tool to support underwriting decisions. Check Results are provided on an "as is" basis and Inshield makes no warranties, express or implied, as to the accuracy, completeness, or fitness for purpose of any Check Result.

No Underwriting Advice

CURAS does not constitute underwriting advice. Check Results are data outputs to inform decision-making — they are not a recommendation to accept, decline, or amend any insurance risk. All underwriting decisions remain the sole responsibility of the Platform User and their organisation.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Inshield shall not be liable for:

  • Any underwriting decision made by a Platform User in reliance on Check Results
  • Inaccuracies in data sourced from third-party providers (DVLA, HPI, media databases)
  • Any loss of profit, revenue, business opportunity, or data arising from use of or inability to use the Platform
  • Any indirect, consequential, special, or punitive loss or damage

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits Inshield's liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or any other liability that cannot be excluded by law.

11

Suspension & Termination

Inshield may suspend, restrict, or permanently terminate a Platform User's access to CURAS at its sole discretion, including (but not limited to) where Inshield reasonably believes that:

  • These Terms have been breached by the Platform User or their Approved Organisation
  • The Platform is being used for an unlawful or unauthorised purpose
  • There is suspected fraudulent or abusive activity associated with the account
  • The Approved Organisation's regulatory authorisation has lapsed, been withdrawn, or become subject to enforcement action
  • Continued access poses a risk to the security or integrity of the Platform or to third-party data subjects

Inshield is not required to provide advance notice of suspension or termination, and is not obligated to provide reasons in all circumstances. Where Inshield determines it is safe and appropriate to do so, it may provide notification of the action taken.

Effect of Termination

Upon termination, all licences granted under these Terms cease immediately. You must stop using the Platform and must not attempt to access it using alternative credentials. Provisions of these Terms that by their nature should survive termination (including intellectual property, data obligations, and liability clauses) will continue to apply.

12

Governing Law

These Terms of Use and any dispute or claim arising out of or in connection with them (including non-contractual disputes) shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales.

The courts of England and Wales shall have exclusive jurisdiction to settle any dispute or claim arising out of or in connection with these Terms.

13

Changes to These Terms

Inshield reserves the right to update or amend these Terms at any time. Where changes are material, Inshield will provide reasonable notice to Platform Users via email or an in-platform notification. The effective date at the top of this page will be updated accordingly.

Continued use of CURAS following notification of updated Terms constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms. If you do not agree to the updated Terms, you must immediately cease using the Platform and notify Inshield.

Cookie Policy

Version 1.0
01

What Are Cookies

Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website or use a web-based application. They allow the platform to recognise your device, maintain your session, and store limited information about your preferences or activity.

Cookies can be session cookies — which expire when you close your browser — or persistent cookies, which remain on your device for a set period or until you delete them. They can be set directly by the platform you are using (first-party cookies) or by third-party services integrated into that platform (third-party cookies).

Similar technologies such as local storage, session storage, and pixel tags may function in a comparable way to cookies. Where this policy refers to "cookies", it includes these similar technologies unless stated otherwise.

02

How CURAS Uses Cookies

CURAS is a professional B2B platform accessed exclusively by authorised insurance professionals. Our use of cookies is intentionally limited and proportionate to that context. We do not use cookies for advertising, behavioural profiling, or cross-site tracking of any kind.

The cookies used by CURAS serve three purposes: keeping you securely logged in during a session, maintaining your platform preferences, and gathering basic anonymous data on how the platform is performing so we can improve it.

B2B Context

Because CURAS is accessed only by approved professional users — not members of the public — our cookie usage is minimal and operationally focused. We have no advertising infrastructure and do not share cookie data with marketing platforms.

03

Cookies We Use

The following table sets out the categories of cookies used on the CURAS platform:

Category Cookie Name(s) Purpose Duration Type
Essential session_id
auth_token
Maintains your authenticated login session. Without this cookie, you cannot remain logged in to CURAS. Session (expires on browser close) First-party
Essential csrf_token Protects against Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) attacks. Required for platform security. Session First-party
Functional ui_prefs Stores your interface preferences (e.g. display settings, column layout) so they are remembered between sessions. 90 days First-party
Analytics _curas_anon Anonymous, aggregated usage data used to monitor platform performance and identify errors. No personally identifiable information is captured. 12 months First-party

Cookie names listed above are indicative. Specific names may vary as the platform is updated. This policy will be updated to reflect any material changes to our cookie usage.

04

Third-Party Cookies

CURAS does not currently integrate third-party advertising, social media, or marketing tools that would result in third-party cookies being set on your device.

Where third-party infrastructure services are used (for example, cloud hosting or performance monitoring), these providers may set limited technical cookies. Any such providers are contractually prohibited from using those cookies for their own advertising or marketing purposes.

No Marketing or Ad Cookies

Inshield does not use, and has no plans to introduce, any advertising cookies, retargeting pixels, or third-party tracking technologies on the CURAS platform. If this changes, this policy will be updated and Platform Users notified.

05

What We Do Not Use Cookies For

To be explicit about our position, CURAS cookies are never used for:

  • Advertising, retargeting, or behavioural marketing
  • Cross-site tracking of users across other websites or platforms
  • Building personal profiles of individual Platform Users for commercial purposes
  • Sharing data with social media networks or advertising platforms
  • Tracking the personal data of insurance applicants or other third-party data subjects whose information is checked through the platform
06

Managing Cookies

You can control and manage cookies through your browser settings. Most browsers allow you to block, delete, or receive warnings before cookies are set. Please note that blocking essential cookies will prevent you from logging in to CURAS and using the platform.

07

Cookie Consent

Under the UK Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR), essential cookies that are strictly necessary for a service to function do not require prior consent. CURAS relies on this basis for session and security cookies.

For functional and analytics cookies, we obtain consent via the cookie notice displayed on first access to the platform. You may update your cookie preferences at any time by accessing the cookie settings panel within CURAS, or by contacting us directly.

Lawful basis: Essential cookies — strictly necessary (no consent required under PECR). Functional and analytics cookies — consent (UK PECR and UK GDPR Article 6(1)(a)).

08

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time as the CURAS platform evolves or as regulatory requirements change. The effective date at the top of this document indicates when it was last updated.

If we introduce new categories of cookies — particularly any that require consent — we will update this policy, notify Platform Users via email or in-platform notice, and re-obtain consent where required before setting those cookies.
